Wakefield Council's first leader dies at 89

Wakefield Council's first leader, Sir Jack Smart, has died aged 89.
Sir Jack lived in Castleford all his life and died in Pontefract General Infirmary on March 4 after a short illness.

He was leader of Castleford council until Wakefield metropolitan district was created in 1973. He led it for 11 years.

A life-long Labour Party member, he was the youngest mayor of Castleford in 1962, and was awarded a CBE then a knighthood.

Present council leader Coun Peter Box said: "Sir Jack was committed to local government – locally and nationally.

"He was a miner and worked as a full-time official for the NUM. He also had a keen interest in the National Health Service, chairing Wakefield Health Authority for many years. Sir Jack will be much missed by his many friends and colleagues."

Lord Lofthouse was leader of Pontefract council when Sir Jack was leader at Castleford. He said: "It has been a privilege to work alongside Sir Jack Smart. He loved the area he represented."

The funeral is at St Paul's Church, Glass Houghton, on March 16 at 10am.
