Susan Leybourne: Meet Belle Isle's own white witch
Meet Susan Leybourne a white witch and medium from Belle Isle with clients as far afield as Holland and America.
YEP's Grant Woodward asks the questions:
"Growing up we were a very close-knit family.
My dad was a postman and my mum was a housewife. My grandma lived just down the road.
I was an only child and didn't like school much and only went for about two-and-a-half days each week.
The rest of the time I was at home reading and writing essays about the things that I was interested in.
I enjoyed the lessons but I was bullied quite a lot because I was different.
I was very open about my abilities because I didn't realise it was something you were supposed to keep quiet.
If I had an interesting vision or experience it was in my nature to share it with people and that led to problems.
But I will always encourage parents of children who show signs of having these abilities to let them explore them.
If you suppress it when you're young it can be very difficult to get back."
"I think being psychic is something you're born with.
I've always known that I have the ability to affect people and to communicate with the spirit world.
When I was very young I saw my late grandfather in the bedroom and he spoke to me.
From that moment on I started reading up on mysticism and the psychic world."
"The last time I cried was when my dad died in 2003.
We were very close and I howled for a month, night and day.
Then one day I heard my dad's voice say, 'Stop it now, Sue, I'm safe.'"
"My philosophy on life is to stay open to whatever flows your way.
Even if it's a negative experience, it will help you grow.
Sometimes I've made real mistakes but they have helped me to become the person I am today.
It's important to get out there and have experiences.
There's no point having all the best gadgets in your living room but not knowing anything about the world or having any memories to look back on."
"The best advice I've ever been given came from my spiritual teacher who has now sadly passed on.
He said, 'I want peaches and cream, I could be dead tomorrow.'
It's about doing what you want to do, having what you want and embarking on adventures.
You're only here for a short time so you shouldn't limit yourself."
"When I left school I did readings before getting a job as a dancer with a circus in Mexico.
A friend had persuaded me to go along with her to the audition and I ended up being chosen for the job.
As soon as I got out there I realised it wasn't for me and I needed to get back to the spiritual world."
"I don't really like the term 'white witch' because magic doesn't have just one colour, it comes in all shades.
Nowadays a lot of New Age people regard themselves as witches when they're not.
Being a witch usually means you are a pagan who is able to influence circumstances to help people.
People come to me for help with everything from getting a job to selling their house or dealing with a manifestation.
But a lot of those who come to see me and have no idea I'm a white witch. I'm just someone who can help."
"My proudest moment was when I addressed the Oxford Union back in 1995.
I didn't realise the enormity of it until I told a friend what I was doing.
I thought it was just another speaking gig but I was following in the footsteps of
all these famous politicians and philosophers.
They asked me to talk about witchcraft through the ages and it went really well."
"There's no-one living or dead who I'd like to meet really.
I'm still in contact with a lot of the people who have passed on and who are special to me.
My dad turns up all the time to see what I'm doing or to give me some help or guidance.
Lots of others do too. The only difference is that you can't hold their hand."
"The one thing I couldn't live without is acupuncture.
Sometimes the healer needs a little healing and acupuncture helps keep all my energy balanced.
I've been going to a brilliant bloke in Street Lane for about five years now.
It's great for opening up all the energy channels in your body."
